Hi all,

Do enlighten me on what are considered good ingredients for cat food and wat are considered bad. Also what is the minimum protein level that a cat needs? Thanks.

hi huihui back in here.. as mentioned those ingredients in the burns dog food post are generally not really welcome in cat foods.. the long explanation is in the article "wats really in pet foods" under the articles section. as for minimum protein need.. what is in the protein count is usually total protein.. but what is really important is amount of meat protein.. that;s never stated.

generally the meat meal n fish meal. the fish meal can be preserved with ethoxyquin and it does not need to be listed. so we wldnt know. also the first ingredient shld preferrably be fresh chicken/meat etc.. but here its the rice first(which is ok.. but not in excessive quantities, shldnt b the first ingredient) and followed by the meat meal. overall it is still not bad.. but if i really wanted to , i cld find something without these ingredients..or at least as secondary ingredients. but like i said.. with dry food nowadays u cant have everything. something like this would be great:

Chicken meal, whole ground rice, fresh deboned chicken, beet pulp (sugar removed), chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols, citric acid and rosemary extract), natural chicken flavor, whole ground flax, MOS (mannanoligosaccharides), FOS (inulin), whole dried egg, phosphoric acid, potassium chloride, salt, calcium carbonate, methionine, yeast culture, choline chloride, lysine, yucca shidigera, vitamin A acetate, vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol), vitamin E (dl alpha tocopherol acetate), *iron Bioplex, taurine, zinc oxide, *zinc Bioplex, niacin, copper sulfate, *copper Bioplex, manganous oxide, *manganese Bioplex, riboflavin, thiamine mononitrate, calcium pantothenate, biotin, sodium selenite, cobalt carbonate, sodium bisulfite complex (source of vitamin K), pyridoxine hydrochloride, vitamin B12, calcium iodate, folic acid. *Bioplex (chelated) mineral

Protein (min.) --- 32.0% Taurine (min.) --- 0.16%
Fat (min.) --- 20.0% Ash (max.) --- 6.5%
Fibre (max.) --- 3.0% Omega-6 (min.) --- 2.5% *
Moisture (max.) --- 10.0% Omega-3 (min.) --- 0.4% *
Magnesium (max.) --- 0.07% ME --- 4,570 kcal/kg
L-carnitine (min.) --- 100 mg/kg * DE --- 4,790 kcal/kg
Starch (max.) --- 232.0%
