Introduction to Parrot Keeping.
This is a guide for parrot-keeper-wannabes who are interested in keeping parrots as pets.
Diet: Parrots mainly feeds on a mixture of different seeds, fruits and vegetables. A mixture of different foods ensure that the bird gets a proper balance of nutrients, which is very important to keep a bird healthy.
Housing: Metal cages are recommended for housing parrots as wooden cages can easily be broken by the birds' strong beak.
Suitable parrots for beginners: Budgies, Lovebirds, Cockatiels and pacific parrotlets. These birds are recommended for beginners because they are small, easy to maintain and not costly to keep. Small birds are often less noisy than their larger counterparts, can easily be handled and do not need big cages . Very suitable for HDB housing.
For those who wants to venture deeper into parrot keeping: Eclectus parrots, African grey parrot, various type of Conures and Pionus parrots are good choices of birds to keep. Although these are more costly and needs the owner to be abit more experienced when handling them these birds are more interactive and can be very bonded to the owner.
Experienced parrot keepers who wants more challenge: The Cockatoos, Amazons and Macaws are for you. These parrots can be trained to do tricks, talk and perform certain tasks. They are the most interactive of parrots but they are also the most costly. They can be loud and some of them are not really suitable for HDB living. However, with some training, even the most noisy parrot can be quiet when you want it to be.
