Dog body odour
Hi
I just bought a Shih Tzu cross and discovered that she had strong body odour even after bath. As a result, we have to apply johnson baby powder on her daily. Suspecting could be the dried dog food which we feed her. Cannot remember the brand because given by the shop owner when we purchased her. Would appreciate it if someone could advise me what should i do about the puppy's odour. Thanks. |

Dog odour, this is very subjective. I find a lot of new dog owners have this complain. No matter what, a dog will have doggy smell. If your dog smells even after bath it could only mean two things; 1) is as I've mentioned above, 2) the grooming process is not thorough. Dirty and/or infected ears are really smelly. Anal gland too needs to be clean out (express) regularly. The pus stinks like hell and small amount oozes out regularly. When impacted, you'll see the dog dragging it's backside (scoot) on the ground occasionally. Expressing the anal gland should ideally be done by a Vet or a trained groomer if you are not sure.

Thanks for your advice. We are quite thorough when cleaning her after she passed motion or urinate. Would be bringing her to a vet soon for her 3rd jab so at the same time would request the vet to do a checkup on her - sign of any ear infection.
noticed that some owners were discussing about the intake of food would also have an impact on the doggie's body odour, so thot may be the cause. Used to keep a japanese spitz, pomeranian but both did not have such problem. Thanks again n have a great week ahead. |

Have just send my puppy for checkup. Everything seemed to be fine except found some ear ticks. Sought vet's advice on the body odour and was told that most dogs have this problem - as what was mentioned in your reply, thanks. however, some may not be that strong - odour. Seem like nothing much can be done. Would try to clean its ears and her teeth more often. Hopefully this help to reduce its odour smell.

It's called Ear Mites not Ear Ticks. Mites (hardly visible) are much smaller than ticks. Hopefully with the healing of the ears the smell would be reduced.
