My glass cages
Hi all,
I started this thread as a kind of `diary' on my whole cage making procedure. All updates etc wld be contained in this thread. I have finally decided on the design and materials used on my cage. Have asked my contractor to go through it again to make sure all of it is feasible before work starts. He says it will take ard 2 weeks, but i suspect longer cos of public holidays etc. The dateline i have given him is the end of the month. Will be confirming the materials and paying the deposit next week. The design is a modified version of Lifan's cage.I will also be using the same colour as her. My modifications so far however, is that I am making it a 40 unit wire based cage with pull out tray. The wire base is removable for easy washing, the trays concealed by a drawer. Trays also removable for easy washing. Each cage comes with an individual lock to be opened by a master key so that no one opens and play with them without my supervision. There is a 2 inch slit on the door for ventilation. To ensure it is cold enough, and my aircon can last longer, I will also be changing my existing air con to a mitsubishi inverter and adding a casement aircon. This idea of using 2 seperate aircons came from WK when he told me he used 2 aircons alternatively for his chin room. I will probably also install either an exhaust fan or ventilation fan for the room. An industrial fan would also be used to circulate air in the room. To help my cleaning process, I also have plans to get a Karcher industrial vacuum, but model not decided. Hmm..don't think there is anything else. Will post more info at a later date. |

Spoke to my contractor again last night to finalise all the details. It is to be completed by June 10th at the latest, but i told him not to rush. To me, the most important thing would be that the job is well done.
My cage is made out of a mix of glass, wood and acrylic and wire. My trays would be made of acrylic as i think this would last longer than a aluminium one, as chin urine can sometimes corrode it. It would also be easier to wash. The frame is a wooden frame, which would be covered with glass on all sides. The contractor i chose is the only one that didn't pull a face and ask me why i kept so many pets...lolz I asked him yesterday if he felt that it was getting too complicated and he was getting 2nd thoughts about doing it for me, cos a lot of the others felt it was too difficult as i insist on the wire base and tray to be removable for wasy cleaning. The wire itself must also be of the right size so that babies can't drop in, but the poop still can. My bottle is also of an irregular shape, so how to hang it outside is another important consideration. To me, being able to remove the trays etc is really important for it to always remain clean as it is much easier to wash. |

Sounds really cool. I don't have so many animals to warrant such a big project but i sure wish the playpens for my buns are more aesthetic!!
Can post pics when its done? Sure could do with ideas to make cleaning easier! |

I will post photos when its done.
P.S. just thought i would add this... anyone who is thinking of using glass cages for their chins/rabbits must be able to provide 24 hours air conditioning. |
