Inner ear infection

Staggering and leaning and going in circles, all in one direction; This has been seen to a result of inner ear infections in the two times we have heard of this in chinchillas. The infection is usually advanced and needs heavy antibiotics and good supportive care on the part of the owner. Again, get to know your vet. The Chinchilla ear is much like a human ear, comprised of three parts: outer [ear canal and ear drum], middle [bones which carry sound waves and amplify them], and inner [the part where the Chloclea and labyrinth aid in balance and pick up sound waves and translate them into nerve impulses. It ends with the acoustic nerve]. Thus with an inner ear infection you see a loss of balance.

My chin was showing the same syptoms too. She was going round in circles slowly.. like she's slow motion. Then we open the cage door and she slumped towards us. Very weak. Then she started to shiver.. After a few minutes, she was back to norm. It wasn't a hot day, in fact it was raining the whole day. so it can't be heatstroke. Do u think she's having the above condition? If she does, what should i do next?

Is the chin kept in an airconditioned environment? If not it could be heat stroke. I know you said it was raining but the combination of high temperatures (anything over 24 degrees C is considered high) and high humidity (you did say it had been raining all day so humidity would be very high) is a risk for heat stroke.

If in doubt, get the chin to a vet that is familiar with chins.
