Post Cat Tails - What Is Your Cat Trying To Tell You?

Cats are wonderful communicators! One of their most interesting ways of getting their point across is when they use their tails. Here's a quick overview of what your special cat is likely to be saying with its tail.

- Tail fully erect, including the tip - This is a greeting! Your cat is saying hello in no uncertain terms, and may also be extending an invitation for you to pet it. Some observers feel this can also be a request for food. A variation of this is a tail held erect and slightly quivering. This seems to be an even more personal or intense greeting.

- Tail curving down, then up again, and relaxed - This is the sign of a relaxed cat.

- Tail slightly raised with a soft arc - A cat with this tail language is showing curiosity or interest.

- Tail erect, but with the tip bent over - This cat is definitely curious about or interested in something, but also feeling slightly cautious.

- Tail tucked between hind legs - A cat with a tail tucked between its hind legs is being submissive. However, be careful, because a cat in this position might be submissive all the way to the point it feels it may need to defend itself.

- Tail low and bristled, back arched - This cat is nervous and afraid. It will probably run if it can but fight if it feels trapped.

- Tail wagging - This gesture has a range of emotions, all the way from small, curious or annoyed flicks to strong, violent wagging, or whipping, completely from side to side. The latter is a strong sign of aggression. If provoked, a cat in this state is likely to attack.

- Tail held over to the side - Usually the sign of a female cat in heat, ready for the male.

- Tail wrapped around the feet of a sitting cat - This is usually a sign of contentment.

- Tail wrapped around feet / body of a cat laying down - This can also be a sign of contentment, and is often observed in cats blissfully sleeping. However, it can also be the sign of a defensive, slightly frightened cat. In addition, if the cat is laying down and in a "hunched" position with its tail wrapped around itself, it could be a sign it's not feeling well.

Did you know?
Almost 10% of a cat's bones are in its tail.
The cat uses its tail for balance. However, cat's without tails usually adapt very nicely.

The domestic cat is the only species able to hold its tail vertically while walking.
