Red and White

Hi Mr Pat, I notice the pictures posted have very vibrant colours, could you enlighten me how to achieve that especially for white and red ranchu per se? Other than depending on sunlight what else can be done to enhance red and white simultaneously.

Thanks
Bill

Sunlight still the best. Other alternatives include vegetable e.g. duckweed/algae in diet, using of colour enhancing pellets and green water (normally sunlight is available in green water).

Like I say, nothing can subsitute sunlight for colour enhancement.

Hi pkkoh, sad to say I'm living near the "artic circle" where my ranchus rearly see the sun. I'm concerned if given colour enhanced food the white portion 'll be stained.

This is something that a friend of mine who worked shift hours do Maybe you can try if you think is ok.

He suntan his ranchu between 8am-12pm whenever he's home during this period of time. He put one ranchu in the white basin (with an airstone) and leave it in a place where there are sunlight. After the suntan, the ranchu is slowly introduced back into the main tub indoor. The water in the basin is usually discarded.

Good or bad, I dun know. I personally find it too much of a hassle.

PYKoh answered very well. The best way to give colour is to keep the fish in real excellent water and give them plenty of vegetable. Vegetable will add colour, and sheen to the scales. But nothing beat fish with excellent condition. One thing to add, if a fish grows too fast the pigment of the scales will generally not be as good as fish that grows gradually. Fish will develop more pigments on the scales as they age. But ranchu also change all through out their lives and there are no set thing.

Nowadays, we live in the age where there are many natural additives that will improve the colours and scales conditions of the fish too. As long as keepers stay on top of the technology trends, the fish will benefit as well.

Duck weed is excellent for the colours and digestion, all through their lives. On the product that I talked about, you may want to see if you have this product called Goldawick available in your neighbourhood. I gave some away at the Workshop we attended in Singapore. I have been using it for almost six months and I find that the colour has improved more than a couple of shades. Quite cool, try it out ok.
