Hello all, I am new to this forum and I am hoping someone can help us here. I have a baby chin which was born yesterday and I found the mom dead this morning. I now need to feed this baby. Any suggestions? Thank you

Goats Milk works best. Its the next best thing to mother's milk. Feed the baby 1cc every 2 hours.
If you can't get goats milk, you can try going to your local pet store to see if they have any puppy/kitten formula. This may not always work but it is better than nothing. |

Thank you for the response. I am wondering a few things. First where would a person buy goat milk? Second I am wondering just how old this baby actually is ... Let me explain.
Yesterday we discovered the baby and did not know the mom was even pregnant. This morning I found the momma which had passed on during the night and I just have no idea why, but the odd thing was the baby was not in the cage. Apparently the baby could squeeze out of the bars of the cage. I am thinking this is not a new born and I am also thinking the baby has been going in and out of the cage as we found droppings in the closet and under the bed and actually found the baby down the hall this morning. I was looking at pictures of babies and this baby looks to be about 2 weeks old from the pics I saw. I feed the baby and it is eating 2 cc of kitten formula about every two hours. I was expecting it to just eat a few drops. This little chin was biting at the syringe and just lapped up the formula. If I post pics I am wondering if someone more experienced could tell me what they think the age to be? It weighed 66 gms this morning and tonight is 72 gms, so it is has put on weight in just 12 hours. Tanya |

Hi,
the weight gain sounds normal. Chin babies are active the moment they are born, so running out of the cage is normal. Regarding the age, I really can't say, cos most babies are born around 40 grams but there are huge and small babies. A friend's chin recently gave birth to a 60g baby. I have no idea where you can buy the goats milk from as i live in singapore, so we r in 2 different countries. I would suggest you do an online search for it over yahoo. |

Glad your baby is health and doing well. The little fellow do sounds like it is at least few days old. But it is difficult to tell how old it is by looking at its appearence. My lightest baby is 27g and heaviest is 62g. The difference can be pretty great.
If the little fellow likes the formular milk, then just ccotinue with it. Its okay. ![]()

Tanya,
I noticed that you are in Bakersfield which I think is in California. You should be able to get goat's milk from any health food store in the area. They will have both fresh and powdered. I am not not too sure how old this kit is but if it is in the 2 week region it will probably be able to consume somewhere between 2 to 3 ccs every feed (two hour intervals around the clock). I would suggest switching from kitten milk replacer to goat's milk if possible. This is because goat's milk is more likely to have the proper nutrients for a chin (herbivore milk vs carnivore milk). Monitor the weight closely. As long as the weight keeps going up you are on the right track. Good Luck, WK |

Thank you for all the input. Tonight I am more worried than this morning. My little baby is not eating as well tonight as it was during the day. Maybe it was just very hungry since mom had passed away last night and it went without food. The last two feedings the baby has only taken maybe half a cc. Much less than this morning. Tomorrow is a holiday so i am unsure if I can find goats milk, but will try. Here is some pics. Tanya
