Happenings on 4/11/2005

Finally people, I am able to relate the ups and downs that happened today when Ah Girl finally delivered her 2nd litter.

3/11/2005
On 3/11/2005, we discovered Girl panting away slightly. Temp dropped to 37.4 deg cel from her usual 38.0. However, we dismissed the panting and decided to retire for the night with plans to check up on Girl again at 0400 hrs the next fateful day : 4/11/2005.

4/11/2005

My wife woke up at 0400 hrs to check on Girl. She was panting away much more.

I woke up at 0530hrs deciding to get ready for the fateful moment when the pups came intothe world. By 0600 hrs, we could see Girl having the regular and frequent contractions that is classical of the birth of a puppy. Any Time now!

After offering her some water and chicken broth. we decided not to stress her with our presence went inti the living room to catch a movie with us periodically checking in on her.

At 0715hrs, much to our surprise (Actually not that surprising cos it happened to us the 1st time round), the 1st pup was out.

Notice the umbilical cord still attached and sticking out from Girl's womb.

We found that Girl, try as she might for another pecuilar reason or so was not able to sever the umbilical cord despite numerous attempts.

Heres the pup suckling with her umbilical cord still attached to Girl

hence after 1 hour of delivery of the 1st pup, we decided to intervene and cut the umbilical cord.

after the cord cutting ceremony.

3 hours + has passed since Girl gave birth to the 1st pup but still no sign of the 1st afterbirth or more importatntly the 2nd pup. Hence I called a vet friend to ask for advice. He promptly advised us to bring girl to the vet asap.

Bout 12 noon, we reached the vets. Upon initial assessment by the vet, an xray had to be taken to determine if the pup had survived the lapse of 4 hours. If gas was seen on the xray, then the pup had probably died.

Yes, u guys can imagine the time taken to do the xray were very long. and they were just one of the longest moments of the day!

Heres the xary film on the retained pup. u will notice the skull and spine in the top lt hand of the film. a totally different direction from where its supposed to come out!

There was no gas seen but the puppy was positioned at the top right hand of Girl's womb. Now we had to try to put her on Oxytoxin drip to help induce her contractions in order for her to expel the pup.

there was still 50% - 50% chance that the pup had oredi passed away in Girl's womb. still all gloom at this point.

we had to wait for the Oxytoxin drip to be administered over 15 mins. again we had to wait: UNCERTAINLY!

After about 20 mins, the vet came out and told us the drip wasnt working and sought our permission to run another dose of Oxytocin. Again, another period of gloom and uncertainty enveloped us. chances of the pup being alive was getting slimmer with every sec ticking by.

When another 20 mins were up, the vet came out and told us the drip wasnt working at all as girl's uterus had probably lost the strength to contract anymore. She also said that the pup had probably died in the womb by now!
This was the last straw, dunno bout the others but my world went into darkness knowing the pup faced almost certain death and Girl's life was in the balance.

With a heavy heart, we gave the vet the go ahead for a C- section to extricate the supposedly dead pup from Girls womb to prevent any infection. U guys can imagine what was going thru my head at this point of time!

with an even heavier heart, I signed the consent form for the operation and we left Girl with the vet to do what she had to do.

the period that we had to wait for news of Girls C- section was certainly the ultimate longest moments that we had.

At around 1315 hrs, finally came some bright news in a gloomy day. The vet called up to say the op had been a success and that the puppy who was lodged inside Girl was alive.

we dubbed her the " Miracle Girl"!

Pix just after the op
