What's your dog's bad habit or behaviour? Anything that is bothering you and preventing you from feeling the joy of dog ownership? Feel free to bring it out for discussion.

My bitch Vicki sleeps with us on the bed every nite. And during day time she will roam about freely in the house. Once awhile she will pee on our bed and this has been going on for a year plus already.

Silvanus,
Thank you for your question.
It's a bad idea to allow your pet dog on the bed. Aside from the frustration of dealing with soiled bedsheets and mattress (the scent cannot be fully removed and continue to be a reminder) it contributes in building dominance in the dog and dominance means there is a potential of aggressive behaviour.

My friend, shut that bedroom door from today onwards for your own good.
If you don't have the heart or have difficulty doing that then I suggest only allowing the dog in the bedroom at bedtime into the room, crated!

Take care
Frankie

Frankie,
Thanks for the pointers. My another dog is doing well since we do not allow him to come up the bed since young. The bitch is different as the previous owner allowed her to sleep with them. Anyway we are trying hard preventing her from coming up to the bed. This time real firm..

Well, I had an old shih tzu, just left us on August due to heart failure. Anyway, he had a bad habit. He likes to treat my bedroom like his store room. He doen't go on the bed but he likes to hide treats around my room. Then when he becomes hungry at night, he will look for his hidden snack. Sometimes he forgets about them and that's when I found out about his naughty habit.

Hi Carol,
For Kenji I believe the cause of paw licking to be diet related. Try adding a good suppliment of vitamins and essential oil to his diet. Give him a good irresistable chew that is more yummy that his paws haha but I am serious.

For Casper add more newspaper outside the pee tray to cover a bigger area including the area that he tends to shoot. It's very important to apply an enzyme cleaner (odor conteractant) after cleaning the all soiled area (not just detergent or masking agent-perfume) to more effectively remove any reminders to the dog. Do this also for the washing machine and if you like, to give it more effect, spray that bitter spray. I've heard from some of my students that "Hong you"-chinese medicated oil works just as well. So you may want to try that on the paws and washing machine. In case anyone is worried about harm to the dog ingesting this stuff, many grandmas used to orally administer one drop for stomach ache.

Read up my post on toilet training.

Cheers
Frankie

Hi crazymouse_yy,
It a natural resource guarding instinct in most dog. You Shih Tzu just have a stronger instinct and shows it in a cute way.

Cheers
Frankie
