More than half of the Competition grade ranchus are already sold but the new owners are not allowed to take them home till after the Workshop. So come on down and see some of the finest ranchus in the world. BTW they are not as expensive as you might be made to think by some people. Go down to the venuse and you can see the big smile on some of the new owner's face. They are guarding their precious ranchus 24-7. Last edited by Ranchu Lover : 23-Jul-2005 at 06:55 PM. |

My take on the recently concluded Ranchu workshop on the 24 July 2005.
The weather on the day of the workshop was already encouraging...slight drizzle to cool of the morning heat, but not heavy enough to dampen the participants' spirit.
The crowd was very encouraging... numbering more than 60's and not including all the children running around enjoying themselves. The speakers are all Thais...Mr Pat from Absolute Fisheries, Mr Peter, Mr Lek and Mr A(Kashino student). Mainly Mr Peter is the one who is lecturing and Mr Pat help to translate and add in his own views. Later after the lecture which because of time constraint have to end after three over hours, Mr Pat was kind enough to stay back and gave very personal advices on everything ranchu under the sun. Notably these visitors are fierce competitors in their homeland...friendly but intensively competive in their pursuit of the ultimate ranchu. It is very humbling to note that these experienced ranchu fanatics view themselves as just passionate ranchu enthusiasts willing to share their passion and joy in the fish and Mr Pat made it absolutely clear that none of them are even close to being called a master of the breed. Funnily Mr Pat said that the "Show Standard" for ranchu just fill up an A4 size paper, but to be a Master learning the A4 size paper might take one more than 15 years and even then maybe still far from being a Master of the Breed. Lecture proper.... (1)....very good use of slides that relate how the various Japanese breeders keep their ranchu...we get to see Mr Kashino, Mr Mita, Mr Takao and many others...their home and fish farm and how they go about in thier hobby...real eye opener...example..Mr Kashino and Mr Mita are hobbyists who hold professional job. Mr Kashino family is in cafe eatery and Mr Mita is a ship captain...how they go about their passionate hobby...waking up at 4.00 am to go out in the early morning cold to net Dapphnia to feed their fishes and they do it everyday except in winter where all the feeding stop and the ranchu goes into hibernation. The slide of all the ranchus lying still in the pond with all those ice and snow on the water surface is a bewildering sight to behold! (2).....We learn about system and how to improvise to suit our lifestyle. All Japanese ranchu keepers have their own very system of keeping their ranchus which they will espoused as the best....listen and learn ...and through trial and error find one that suit your individual lifestyle best. Tho' the various Japanese breeders might be different in the way they keep their ranchu they share a common ultimate goal and that is to compete in the AJR Competition. (3)....We learn about grooming. The ranchu must be of good bloodline and must have the basic features that can be groomed to be a top ranchu. Learn also there is no perfect ranchu...ranchu by itself is already a deformed fish from its original stage(birth and origin) and that it is the skill of the keeper/owner in grooming that finally define the status of the fish during competion. Mr Pat mentioned that the fish itself is only 10%...90% of what the fish can ultimately be depend on the grooming skills of the owner....WOW!!! (4)...We learn about feeding...really can throw all those archaic feeding ideas out of the window. A point to note here is the growth of the young ranchu...don't overfeed thinking you will help the fish get bigger faster...end up with bigger and uglier scales...and young ranchu can only grow so much in length given a certain time frame and any x-tra food will only goes into deepening of the fish downward...end up having young pregnant looking ranchu which can be very hard to correct...end up throwing potential fish out of the window again. (5)...Water management....very important and also how many ranchus in a tank..real eye opener. Also a note here on green water management and also learn about what is good and bad algae. Also a bit on diseases which I think because of time constraint was regretably just skimped through. (6)....The ranchu itself...we learn why when the bbrs are changing colour we got to control the feed intake . We also learn how to really understand and appreciate ranchu..... the bigger part of the experience come from looking at the ranchu pictures...stare...stare...stare some more and the "ranchu juices" will start flowing when you see enough pictures which can amount to thousands pictures. Look tough...but the Japanese judges in their Japanese show got to look and remember more than a thousand ranchus in their judging assignment. There are a lot other stuffs that I picked up in this workshop...I really appreciate the time and effort that bro Ranchu Lover put into getting this workshop going....I just want to say I benefit tremendously from the workshop and with the free Japan vcd, I am oogling over all the beautiful Japanese show specimens....again and again. Lastly will like to thank Mr Pat and his team for coming down to conduct this workshop...really apprecaite....I am just one in the crowd and I doubt you know who I am(not important)...you did a wonderful job. Regards Kitsilano
