Try this Palm Cockatoo SSP Husbandry manual's chapter VIII -Hand rearing and medical care for young palm cockatoos. I have no doubt to the our old timer breeder's 'proven' fomula - Nestum+egg yolk as there r many success story in raising baby parrots in the past & present. But somehow now u r dealing with 2 precious baby palms and has been waiting for 15 years. Do some research and make the best decision. Good luck man. Is your pairs Goliath (26"-27") or atterimus(18"-20") nominate species. |

palm cockatoo
I didn't know it was difficult to breed palm. I thought Singaporeans are well versed in this especially after seeing the pair shown at Ruperts's farm.
In reply to amazingpetparrot, the palms I'm having is about 24-25 inches, so I suppose it's Goliath. I'm sorry, no visitors for now as the pair is still agitated if it sees me although they tolerate me handling the baby. Just some info - the red patch near the beak is a very good indicator of health. Both babies doing well, the hand fed one is a bit underweight though. Quite nervous about the success though cause the palms don't have permit and it's illegal to have them here. Cant help it cause its' previous owner did not bother applying for one. Any one out there willing to spare a permit? |

Hi,
You have two babies in the same clutch from your pair? One is with the parents and the other is hand fed by you? |

Actually there is another subspecies call Stenolophus (Probosciger aterrimus stenolophus) which is slightly smaller and have smaller crest than goliath. There r very few information about this subspecies, generally they r called goliath by most people.

Stenolophus
That is not correct. The Van Oort's Palm Cockatoo (Probosciger aterrimus stenolophus) is as large as a Goliath but weighs slight more averaging 1200 grams for males and has a longer overall body length. In profile, they look bigger and longer than Goliath.
The crests are not smaller but of a different structure and there are more numerous feathers within the crest region. It is very rare but there are breeders with breeding groups of this subspecies and pictures can be found on other discussion groups on cockatoos. |
