Thanks Ranchu Lover for the photos. Curious, but with the fine netting over some of the tubs, does it mean that it's rather dark for these tubs?

This question I cannot answer you as I was given the honour to view the ranchu and take some pictures.

Took so many pictures and confused which is which. Will show some pictures later when I am more settled.

Netting or Bamboo curtain could be used for various reasons. Quarantine, treatment of sick fishes as well as providing shades to the ranchus during a hot afternoon. In Japan, the breeders will covered up their tubs/ponds after feeding at 11pm or 12 pm so that the ranchus dun affected by the hot afternoon sun, esp. on a full stomach. I even heard that another advantage of covering up after the mid day meal is to prevent possible stress to their ranchus by the surrrounding factors e.g. human traffic walking near the tub/pond and etc. In Japan, they treat their ranchus with utmost respect and do things very seriously. Some breeders will remove the netting after 5pm for the last feeding of the day while other remain covered until next morning (around 4-5am).

It is good to keep part of your pond dark, so that the fish can rest and do not get too stress out, or swim too much. Usually we do this to smaller fish only. There are also one pond that has sick fish with medication in it, (no sunlight).

Be advise that air circulation is very important for your TVRs. In the picture you will see that the ponds are on an outside deck with roofing. The wind blows quite strong all day long and it is quite ok to leave the cover for most of the day. If you do not have air circulation in your home, it is very important to provide it, particularly if you leave part, or the whole pond covered.
