Guys in Michelin's Suit
Ref: above pics
If you are wondering why the guys are wearing the ' Michelin's Tyre Suit ', they are actually called ' decoy or helper ' in bite work training. Some used the term 'aggravator' or 'agitator' but commonly used term is 'decoy'. There is big difference between decoy for sports dog and police or PP dog as each of these disciplines has different goals in mind. There is a distinction between training and certification. If you are decoying in a certification trial you are testing a dog and when you are training a decoy work, your job is to bring out in a dog what you want to bring out in the dog. A lot of people call themselves a decoy thinking that by just putting on the suit and mimicking what they saw will do all the job. There's no goals setting and they have no idea what they want to achieve during the bite session. In order for a decoy to carry out his job, he has to first have a little bit of understanding in what he wants to bring out in a dog. The role of a decoy in training is he is the mechanism of reward for the dog. It is just like when you are training OB with your dog. Dog puts his butt on the ground, you reward the dog for sitting. In bite work training, dog barks you reward him with a bite! Last edited by Robin Gan : 15-Nov-2007 at 09:03 AM. |

It all looks very impressive! I wouldn't want to be on the other end! Hahaha
Just wondering, in real life situations, when the dogs chases after a suspect, would the dog attack the suspect? I suppose so, right? If so, what happens if there are serious wounds on the person? I'm just thinking about the ethical dilemas involved! Hahaha. What happens if the suspect wants to sue the police force(just an example)? Would this be possible? Or has all rights been given up when he refuses to hand himself in? |

Quote:
You are right. When the K-9 handler decided to release the dog he would want the dog to apprehend the suspect. Quote:
Most Police Dogs/Law enforcement (LE) are taught on targeting (arm, bicep, tricep or leg), bite and hold the suspect until the handler comes in and handcuff the suspect or even out on command. Quote:
Yes, and in fact because of so many lawsuits against the LE, its part of the protocol not to teach their dogs to bite anywhere and everywhere as each puncture wounds will cause them having to write more reports. Sometimes suspect may decide to surrender in the middle of the flee so K-9 handler may have to command to call-off (back to handler) or bark and guard ( barking in front of suspect and if suspect decided to flee the dog will again apprehend). This bark and guard is not so popular amongst the LE.

Our team Mr Robin Gan from Real-K9, Mr Leo Pui from NightwatchK9, Mr Francis Tan from MerlionK-9 and myself will be travelling to Sibu tomorrow. It will be an eye opening experience for me to visit the Sibu Police Dog Unit. Hopefully I can get hold of some nice pictures.
