Hi Guys,

I am seldom online and hardly post, but will do so when I deem it necessary... So pardon me if I come across being too curt...

Firstly, I think it is important to know the breed well. The Parson, and especially in the lines of Refund, Napoleon and Vicky, is bred to hunt. And if the dog can't hunt or has a low hunting instinct, it is deemed as a useless number in the pack. At least that is what the breeders of Refund and Napoleon will tell you.... There is Lakeland and Fell Terrier blood in these dogs and the reason for infusing these blood is for their aggressiveness in the face of danger and adversary.

While it is possible, with lots of hard work, to train a dog to obey, one must not forget or even think that a few days or months of training can over-rule the many years of selective breeding for hunting instincts in this breed.

Cheers for now!

Louis

Hi Louis,
Let me start by saying I am no expert in JRT (Parson or not) or dog breeding.
I do agree with you wholeheartedly on your point on selective breeding. However we all know the typical pet dog "don't have a job anymore"..hahaha
He eats and sleeps most times. The fortunate one gets to go for walks and play at the parks. Most owners don't need or want the dog to HUNT, especially aggressiveness.

Hi Dogcom,

While it is true that pet dogs now no longer have much jobs to do, but that does not mean that their instinct will disappear altogether.

Cheers!

Louis as I said I agree with you wholeheartedly on the genetics
You see the majority of pet dog owners are not the least interested in a show quality dog or for that matter know what to look for; so in a sense it's don't make a difference to them even if it's got weak temperament.

Let's just say I am a strong believer and advocate of "Nurture over Nature". For example I have help rehabilitate dogs whose owners are made to believe that sterilisation will help reduce or eliminate aggression but it didn't; and dogs whose owner had thought of taking the same route but with training neutering becomes unneccessary.

P.S The point I made here is not a reflection of my attitude towards neutering. I support neutering for the the regular pet dog. Dog breeding should be for the love and passion of the breed not those after some quick bucks.
