Japanese Chickens
 

I was wondering if there are any chicken fanciers in this forum ?

As a hobby I also breed Japanese chickens - Yamato Gunkei, Ko Shamo & Higo Chabo -. I have written two books concerning Japanese chickens. These books are written in Dutch, English and Japanese. People interested in the books can PM me.

I believe not many people here are awared you are breeding Japanese chickens too, unlike ranchus you have made a big name in this region. Best of all you even had written 2 books. It will be good if you can share in this area too. Not many people in Singapore are keeping Japanese chickens now. It was once quite popular couple of years back. I believe this is due to lack of keeping knowledge and also quality chicks available.

I keep Hollandse Kuifhoenders and Chabos. Only the Chabos are Japanese and I'm not really active here, just popping by and looking around occasionally.

I had some Ko Shamos in the past but now only keep a few Cornish Game bantams which are closely related.

My father also breeds chickens. He has bred "Hollandse Kuifhoenders" for more than 40 years. He became European Champion several times. A number of years ago, we exported some of our "Hollandse Kuifhoenders" and some "Cornish Bantam" to Mr. Yoshio Zenimoto in Japan.

Hi Geert,
I use to keep some bantam before and have always been looking for Higo Chabo type. I love those with huge comb and wattles , the bigger the better . How long before your chabo have those long hanging wattles and huge comb ? In what color form do they come in ? Still learning from the expert here. :D

Higo Chabo are very rare ; even in Japan. Higo Chabo are bred in the South of Japan (Kyushu Island - around Kumamoto).
Higo Chabo soon have the big comb and wattles. You can immediately see the difference with normal Chabo.
The are two types of Higo Chabo : Taikan Chabo and Daruma Chabo. Taikan Chabo have the normal Chabo tail. Daruma Chabo have a short tail called "Chokio". Taikan Chabo excists in black-tailed white and in white. Daruma Chabo excists in black and in white.
