Training For An Adopted 4yr plus Dog
I am a new member here. About 1wk ago adopted a 4-yr plus dog (mixed Pom/maltese) to avoid him going to SPCA. Since its not paper/toilet train, now slowly training him. Presently only know how to perform 'shake hand'. Quite aggressive n growled when scolding him, maybe due to past mistreatment/handling by previous owners. Is he too old to be sent for obedience training n if ok what is the cost. Or since he is a matured dog what is the best way to 'self-train' him at home. Appreciate advice from experts here.

You can teach an old dog new tricks :D however aggression needs proper and careful handling; otherwise some dogs gets more "fired up" instead of submitting. Most people can learn from a book to teach basic obedience commands with varying level of success but nothing beats personal coaching by an experienced person. Doggie behaviour can be rather complex and rehomed dogs with their emotional baggage are often misunderstood. If your dog do snap at you (not just growl) I'd advise that you seek professional help early. :)

Tks dogcom for your advice. Sofar my doggie do not snap at me. He only growl but when I point my finger fiercely telling him to stop most of the time he obey. Btw how much for the basic obedience course n any place to attend near Yishun.
