Rabbit gave birth

Hi all,

Just wanna share, yesterday morning my black female Lionhead gave birth but the funny thing was..... there was only 1 baby!!!! Weird. She didn't kill any or eat any coz she actually cleaned up the baby herself. There was only ONE!!! Werriidddd....

And the funny thing, this baby is not normal size. It's almost as big as a fat syrian hamster and it has fur on it's head and baby teeth. I'm now the foster mom coz my rabbit is a first-timer and she has no idea what to do with only 1 baby. The proud father is a white Angora mix Lionhead.

This is my first time with newborn rabbit kit. Hopefully it'll grow up big. :D

congrats crazymouse_yyh :D

do keep an eye and observe whether mummy is feeding the baby...try putting a towel and cover the baby cos mummy might accidently step on the baby and thus cause injury,do not worry dat mummy cant find baby cos when its time for feeding, mummy will actually lift up the towel and search for baby :D pls also seperate daddy n mummy cos mummy can get pregnant again after birth...if there is other qns which u need to know dun hesitate to post ur qns here :)

Hi Angel99,

Well, I'm now hand-rearing the baby coz I'm so afraid the mom would step on it. I put it in once and she accidently kicked the baby to the far end of the cage. Good news is it's suckling well, I only let them together during feeding time, which is twice a day. I was so excited that I quickly read everything I could off the internet.

I actually have 3 rabbits and all live in separate cages. This was a planned breeding but I thought it wasn't successful coz I couldn't see any pregnancy. But hahaha.. I was surprised in the morning with a wiggly baby.

:) mummy's milk is always the best...if u feel dat mummy is not feeding baby then try holding on to mummy n stroke her nonstop while on the other hand, bring baby under mummy, baby will find the way to mummy's milk...let go only when u feel baby has enough...
my ND is also very rough towards her babies too...dats y i put a piece of towel inside, wrap the babies up and place them in a corner of the cage...the next morning when i go check...all her babies hv very round bellies dat looks like its bursting ...try to make it a natural way to have mummy feeding the baby instead of hand feeding it...baby dont get sick so easily n the chances on baby living is higher too...have fun! :)

Oh. Thanks for the advice!

Baby is actually on moher's milk now. Just have I have to do most of the cleaning and warming for the baby. I don't think the mother rabbit has much milk so I feed it a bit, the baby enerally spends about 5 to 10 minutes suckling on mom before I give it a bit of formula to make it fuller. Then I'll wipe it's butt till it pees. I'm doing he same thing as what you said. I put the baby under mom while I hold mom. I think mother rabbit doesn't like the feeling, can see it in her eyes hahhah... anway, she's a young rabbit and it's her first time.

haha...dats good...actually u can try sprinkling the formula powder into the mother's food so as to promote more milk secretion...try not to hold down the mother too tight as this will stress the mother out,juz gently hold on to her n stroke n pat her while baby is feeding...normally when someone is patting n stroking the bunny, the bunny wun move...u can even focus the stroke on mummy's head...do also give mummy the papaya cubes...not too much...4 small cube will do...after baby finish, try to leave it alone and see whether mummy cleans it up or not...or u can try putting baby infront of mummy, normally mummy will licks the baby...if all fails, then u got to clean it up for her liao :)

Oh... papaya cubes? What is it for?

Oh, mother rabbit is ok with baby feeding from her but will occasionally jump away or kick.

I'm doing the wiping and cleaning coz mother rabbit's not keen in doing. I put th baby near her face but she ignores it totally. I have pictures of baby bunny.. wil post it soon :D

papaya cubes is meant to cure furball problem and it also contains alot of protein too...since baby is feeding well and u r doing the cleaning up,i guess there is not much problem liao...hope to see ur baby pics soon :)
