Using Green Water
 

Hi Everyone,

It's been a long long time since I last raised a goldfish and lately, my interest was stirred up after seeing all the really nice TVR and SVR. Would definitely not consider myself someone who's new to this hobby as I started out with guppies and platies back when I was a kid.

Anyway, there's much discussion over the topic of using green water here in Malaysia and I am wondering if it's truly necessary. The highlighted benefits are better shape, colour and scale formation. If it is, what other alternatives can a hobbyist use to obtain the same results ?

Correct me if I am wrong, but I know for a fact that Japanese use them during winter seasons only and concentrate on the rest of the remaining year raising their ranchus in clear water.

Would like to get some good answers soon, especially from Mr.Pat as I have been reading a lot of his wonderful threads. However, I notice there're hardly any new postings of late, so I thought I could get things running again.

I have been missing for quite some time since I have been moving shops and house, so do bare with me through this season of changes.

Any way, back to the question at hand. I personally believe that you can keep both system depending on your expertise and equipments at home. I keep my fish in both system, most in fiberglass ponds and the other in a very large pond which in itself is a green water system since I rare change the water 100 percent. Green water at it's purest form is not necessary. It is better to provide lots of sun light which will be much more beneficial for the fish with all the positive effects that green water will suppose to bring. Any one else has an openion here, you are all very welcome. GF are not difficult fish to keep. Clean water, lots of sunlight and breeze and ample good nutritions and supplements for best results.

Thanks alot Pat ! Good info you have there :) In fact, I do understand that some people may have space constraint and prefer to keep their GF indoor. Would using a lamp work in this case ?

Hi Pat,

without the green water how would you make the nitrate level down as low as 5ppm.

I have been keeping ranchu in 5ft tank, and the nitrate is always about 25-45ppm. not untill switch to GW, then i can bring the nitrate level to 5pm

and other benefit of GW is that i dont need to do a lot of water change and yet the nitrate still low.
