The Dog Scouts Of Malaysia
Yesterday was the first official gathering of the Malaysian Dog Scouts. It was held at Ikano Power Center at around evening. The event was to introduce the public to Malaysia's first Dog Scout club. Dogs from all shapes and sizes showed their skills at agility and tricks for fun, later on there was a potluck dinner.
“We strive to make a difference”
is the Motto for Dog Scout of Malaysia.
Everyone appreciates a well mannered dog. These dogs are dotted on by strangers and even more so by their owners who are swollen with pride.
Unknowingly, that dog becomes an ambassador for good training and responsible dog ownership everywhere he or she goes. Dog Scouts participate in their communities, just as the Boy or Girl Scouts do. We hope one day there will be Dog Scouts Troops all across the nation, and these people and their dogs become involved in helping in the community.
Dog Scouts are encouraged to conduct clean-up efforts, raise money for shelters, volunteer their time at nursing homes, orphanages spreading love to the elderly the infirm or less fortunate, or visiting schools teaching responsible ownership lessons to kids. Kids who fear dogs are those children who do not own dogs at all. Therefore this is the unknown, the grey area as you might say. The encounters with dogs might have not been good ones in the past and therefore fear sets in.
When a child sees how the dogs completely understand and cooperate with their humans during the demo, it teaches the children a lesson that teaches them that dogs are intelligent, loving creatures, who can be wonderful friends and companions, if you’ll just teach them something. This teaches the children to treat dogs with respect and to value all life.
THE DOG SCOUT OF MALAYSIA LAWS
A Dog Scout should always be :-
1. Courteous and friendly
2. Set a good example
3. Respect wildlife
4. Well mannered
5. Show kindness
6. Respect public property and public areas
7. Help
Owning a dog brings a great deal of enjoyment but also carries with it a series of responsibilities. If owners are not aware of these responsibilities then communities can grow to dislike the dogs in their areas and anti-dog attitudes can develop. Most of the time dogs have been misunderstood, taken for granted and ill-treated. Our goal is to help dog owners value their companions more, and deepen their bonds with their dogs. We need to help people learn how to be responsible dog owner, and give them the right answers or help to perplexing behavioural problems.
Dog Scouts of Malaysia (DSM) was started by a few dedicated dog owners who enjoyed spending their leisure time with their dogs and meeting like-minded dog owners. At DSM, we want to teach all dog owners to be responsible for their pets and become "model citizens." This is part of the goal of Dog Scouts of Malaysia.
If you get a dog for the right reasons and are committed to giving that dog the love, care, attention, socialization and training that he deserves, you will be able to honour your commitment to being his partner and caregiver his whole life long. Dogs are an absolute JOY to own, if people do it correctly! The reason why dogs are so misunderstood in this country is because there are an awfully lot of people out there not doing it correctly! We want to help people appreciate their dogs.
Dogs will get merit badges just like humans do!
