What do you need before you get your rabbit? Well, here is a list for you to refer to so that you can prepare for your new baby.
Note: * means its optional - Basic bunny diet, in the form of pellets ( Advise: Choose those plain pellets without all the colourful treats to ensure a balanced diet. If you choose those with the treats, your bunny will probably only eat the treats and ignore its basic diet. There are alot of good brands available here such as Oxbow, Burgress etc) -Water Bottle or Bowl ( Not all bunnies know how to drink from a bottle. You should always check before you bring the bunny home.If you are not sure, always place both a bowl and bottle in its enclosure to ensure that your rabbit has something to drink.) -Food Bowl -Housing (Most people use either cages or playpens. I would advise against the use of fish tanks unless you are able to provide air con and ventilation. For cages, they come in the form of solid base and wire base. Minimum cage size differs based on the size of your rabbit and the number housed in a single cage. The bigger the rabbit, the bigger the cage should be. The more rabbits there are in a cage, the bigger the cage should be) -Hay (Necessary to provide roughage in their diet so they don't suffer from fur block. Also helps wear their teeth down. Many rabbits are fussy about their hay and like it to be consistent. Try brands like APD if you have a fussy rabbit. Other brands like Oxbow, Marukan and Hay-Pro also have hay. Always check the hay before you purchase it for freshness) -*Litter box/tray (You can get those specifically for small animals from pet shops) -Bedding (in the form of Cat litter such as Breeders Celect or Back-2-Nature, Aspen wood shavings etc. They can help reduce odor) -*Hay Rack -*Toys (although i have listed this as optional, toys help to wear down your rabbits teeth and is a great source of entertainment!) -Nail Clippers -*Other grooming tools such as slicker brushes -*First Aid Kit (always handy when you have one. Include items such as stypic powder to stop bleeding in case you cut the quik when trimming their nails) -*Emergency Contact list (Always good to have a list of vet clinincs with the vet names, address, opening hours etc you may want to go to if anything happens. You may want to list those that do house calls too. |
