Fighter Betta (Plakud) from Thailand

First of all a little warning about this thread. I am about to cover the part of the Thai tradition of Siamese Fighting fish which still continues till these days, the Fighter Betta which may not suit every one's tastes. Similar to Cock Fighting, and Bull and Buffalo fighting, they are quite blood sports but are observed loyaly due to the fact that these activities are integral parts of the Thai culture. I deeply respect these cultural traditions but often time feel very conflicted. It is very difficult not to judge since I am a great lover of animals. Personally I do not like these activities very much, but nonetheless it is the part of a hobby which brings pride to many of my countrymen. Here goes.

As I have mentioned in my introduction posting that Plakud Fighting is a part of Thai tradition which is still in practice today. Muay Thai, Cock Fighting, Bull Fighting, and Plakud Fighing are considered the traditional cultural activities and they are allowed under the Thai law. A big part of the Plakud industry in Thailand concentrates mainly on this segment of the market. The Plakud that are developed for fighting purposes will have their own standards and techniques that all breeders try to achieve in order to produce the best fighter. Most of the fighter plakud are closely related to the wild plakud in Thailand. They are much more resilient and they do recover very well from injury. But most of all, they are great fighters and will fight to the death. This is a genetic characteristics which have been homed over the years.

The pictures that you will see will be charts of what breeders of Fighter Betta look for. All pictures are borrowed from the Fighterbetta.com.
