You can teach an old dog new tricks however aggression needs proper and careful handling; otherwise some dogs gets more "fired up" instead of submitting. Most people can learn from a book to teach basic obedience commands with varying level of success but nothing beats personal coaching by an experienced person. Doggie behaviour can be rather complex and rehomed dogs with their emotional baggage are often misunderstood. If your dog do snap at you (not just growl) I'd advise that you seek professional help early.
