Gill problem is a serious threat to the health of your ranchu if it is not treated properly and early enough. One quick reminder to all beginners is that when your ranchu starts to behave weirdly such as stop swimming or starting to produce an excess amount of slime, then more than likely your ranchu is sick.
A standard procedure for all types of sickness in ranchu is that after you have found out that your fish is sick, you should quarantine the whole pond right away. If your other fish are not sick, separate them into other container and treat the sick fish only. Make sure to quarantine all sick fish or fish that were kept in the same pond as the sick fish, for at least one week before returning any of them back to general population after you are sure that they are ok. YOu must fast your fish that are sick or under quarantine and do not feed for at least 10 days or until the fish is better. Fish can go a very long time without food. You can tell when a fish is better, when it starts to swim and look for food. Mix .5% - .7% of sea salt, Parazan D, antibiotic medication (yellow medication), and Tropical Gold (Green medication -This medication will deal with all white spot, tail rot, and water mould disease in all goldfish and Nishiki-koi and the extermination of fish louse and schor worm) together and add to the pond. Cover the pond up so no sun light can get in. Keep the pond cover for one week before opening the lid again. If the fish have not recovered fully, change half the water in the pond and administered another dose of the same medication and close the pond for another week. Be sure that you do not feed the fish at all during the treatment. The first set of pictures will be of fish with gill problem. Please notice the white spot found all over the gill. When you find that you fish is sick, you must inspect the gill immediatly by running your finger underneath the gill and lift up to inspect the inner gills. If you find any white spots out of the ordinary, you should start the treatment right away. You should inspect your fish regularly so that you will see what are the characteristics of healthy fish. When the fish gets sick then it will be real simple to notice. The following sets of pictures will be of how Mr.Kashino administered the said treatment at his home in Japan. Please be inform that Mr.Kashino's treatment ponds that he use contain 150 litre of water each, and the medication is measured accordingly. You will able to see a step, by step application of all the medications and illustration of how to measure medication properly. The application of the proper dosage of medications for your ranchu is crucial for success of the treatment. If you add too much medication, your fish will not get better, but worse. It may be weird for some of you to treat your fish with all the medication at the same time, but this is a method that has been tried and tested in Japan, as it is recommended by Mr.Kashino, himself.

Ailments and treatment
This first set of pictures are of the weighting and application of salt and medicines for ranchu. Please notice that exact weighting for an exact dosage is most crucial. Mr.Kashino weights the container first in order to be able to apply the correct weight of salt (750 grams) for the pond (150 litres).

Ailments and treatment
The first picture is of the medications use by Mr.Kashino. The white bottle on the left is Parazan D (already mixed white milk liquid): Please notice the proper dosage in the next series. And the bottle in the middle is the Tropical Gold Fish Medication produced by Tsuji Yakuhin-kogyo Co., Ltd. (consists of Trichlorophon, Methylene Blue, Acrinol Sodium bicarbonate, and Sodium Chloride) This medication will deal with all white spot, tail rot, and water mould disease in all goldfish and Nishiki-koi and the extermination of fish louse and schor worm.
And the second picture is of the antibiotic as used by Mr.Kashino (produced by Ueno Fine Chemicals Industry, Ltd.).

Ailments and treatment
After applying the salt, then you can mix in the Parazan D. For 150 litres, Mr. Kashino use 30 cc of Parazan D. The medication is mixed right into the pond as seen in the picture.

Ailments and treatment
The next step is to mix the antibiotic (yellow medicine) and Tropical Gold medication together before applying into the pond. For 150 litres of water, Mr. Kahsino put in two spoon full of antibiotic and 3 spoon full of the Tropical Gold Medication. (Each spoon contains approximately 2 grams of medicine) First mix Tropical Gold with a bowl of water, then mix in the antibiotic, stir well, and apply to the pond directly.
The pictures below are of Mr.Kashino applying the treatment.

After the medications have been well mixed, close the pond up so that no sunlight can get in and do not reopen the pond up againg until seven days have passed. (Sunlight will deteriorate the effectiveness of the medicine.)
I hope that this treatment will be of help for those of you who run into the gill problem. Many hobbyist have told me that this treatment also work well with other ailments as well. I will leave it up to you to try it out. You may have to tweak the system a bit to best suit your style. I would like to offer a few words of caution, try to use strict dosage for all medications, and learn to diagnose the different ailments properly. A little studying, goes a long way for the sickness of your fish. Instead of waiting for the fish to die, you should at least try your best to fix them. I try not to use medicine to fix every thing. Most time I will use just salt and fasting to fix minor health problems. The longer you use certain medicines, the more the germs will get use to the medicines, and you will have to keep increasing the dosage over the long run. Only experience can guide you here. You have to know when you fish is getting sick and when it is getting better. Feel free to drop us a line if you have any questions about the treatment or the medications. Thank you very much Mr.Kashino for your kind assistance and for the excellent pictures.

Hi Pat, was wondering, will this combination salt, antibiotic and fungus treatment work if Parazan D is left out? Because I do not think I can get it...have not seen it for sale from the shops I frequent.

It is quite an important part. Before I was using the combination without the Parazan D, and it was not as effective. There are Parazan D available in solid form in Bangkok. However, I do understand that some medicines are hard to come by in SG. If you frequent Bangkok at all, I think that you can probably find some to take home for your personal use. One more thing is that, the Tropical Gold Medication is not only for fungus alone. Please check on the ailments list for this medication, ok. regards, Pat
