A daily dose of fresh fruits and vegetables combined with the proper pellets from reputable brands will me more than sufficient nutrients for normal pet birds. For breeding birds, eggfood is just to supplement the protein level in the diet.
Using home made recipes for birds may not be as good as using commercial bird food for very simple reasons.
- Bird food from reputable brands are formulated by experts and professionals with years upon years of bird keeping/breeding. They know what is the ratio of nutrients for optimal intake.
- Home made recipes are most likely blended from fresh foods, storage of the home recipe you made might not be correct and even if refrigerated, bacteria can still grow in the mix and destroy your nutrient combination.
- Most reputable brands are being used by bird breeders/keepers all over the world and has been proven to be good when birds feed on them.
- We can tell you what nutrients are needed in a bird's diet but if the ratio in the end product you made is not correct, your bird will most likely suffer from a particular nutrient deficiency in the long run.
We all want the best for our birds, I myself keep 2 mollucan cockatoos and they are doing fine on commercial parrot food. I will let the professionals do the calculation of nutrients for me rather than i myself make mistakes in their diet and cause them to suffer in the long run.
Rgds.
