Wink Love Bird Breeding

I bought a peach face lovebird when it was still a few weeks old and has been keeping it for almost 3 years. As I notice it has grown in adulthood and I've been spending less time with it due to my busy schedule, I got it a mate, a female peachface (the first one is a male) This female is around 9 months old I was told. I am hoping to mate these birds, and has bought a nesting box and also addition food for them. They have been together for about 2 ~ 3 months, but I've yet to see them mating... I've noticed that the male is trying but the female does not seem to be too interested. The only gesture she allows the male is to get close and peck on her head and also something like kissing.....
Can anyone give me some tips as to how to get the birds to mate?

Hi,

When lovebirds are ready old enough they will mate. You need to put in a nest-box with some wood-chips.

Are your sure that the second bird is a female? Two males will behave like a true pair and even mate! gay-birds!

If it is a female, then she may be still too young. I suspect that your second bird is only 6-8 months old to date. At 10 months or so they will try to breed. It is better to delay breeding till she is a year over. Many young females died during their first few clutches as their bodies are not ready.

Regards

Hi Mr Rupert,
Thank you for your advise.
The pet shop owner confirm the sex of the second bird for me when I bought from them. I thought I can trust them as they were breeding alot of lovebirds at their shop.

well, I'll just keep my fingers crossed that they are right and I can see the birds mating soon.

Still no signs of breeding between the pair. Wonder if it is normal? Anyone can help give me some tips on how to enhance the breeding chances?

I noticed the male feeding the female sometimes, and I put wood shaving into the nest box, and noticed that the female is tidying the nest box. But it seems that the female is still not ready for mating as it is quite aggressive towards the male when the latter tries to get closer to her.

Then maybe you have to give them some more time...

From my observation, the female will bring nestling material to the nestbox when she is ready to breed. She will bring the material under her feather

Question

Hi Tanin,
Thank you for your advise.
Guess I'll just have to wait somemore...
By the way, where and how much would it be if I want to bring my birds for DNA testing to confirm their sexes?
