Thumbs up

Good genes hamsters are hard to buy. The pet shop ones, totally no idea, the history of parents and most of the time get the inbreeding ones. Put $$ aside, when I bought some dwafts from pet shop, the fur is not as nice as your hamsters in the pics. And yes, definately, the size is smaller, cause the person who breed it, does not prepare pre and post natal food like u. We are working adults, buying is always not a problem but frequent visiting to the vet is a problem, as we juggle work, kids, family and pets!

So getting a good genes pet is important to me, and it goes a long way....and animals that do not fall sick easily, are usually the well fed ones plus good genes. Not to say that we are choosy....but we are in a stressful environment, and why add somemore worries to it by getting an unhealthy pets? The burden falls on every owner that owns a pet. And thanks for reserving one for me.....will patiently wait for him!

Imo

Hi,

not to offend or anything, but i don't understand something. How do you know if the hamster is genetically sound? I assume that the breeding hamsters in singapore would be from a petshop or local breeder (who most probably have gotten their hamsters from a petshop), so how do would one know if it is from sound genetic lines?

Pedigrees created for hamsters in singapore doesn't really mean anything to me, cos the hamsters in singapore, at the end of the day, all come from a petshop. Very few people actually import hamsters, although i know some people who have done so. So, for those that don't import the hamsters, they get the hamsters from a petshop, so isn't the babies from inbred lines again if all hamsters in shops are inbred(assumingly)?

For me, I imported my buns cos i wanted my pets to have a true pedigree, that if i really wanted to, can date back to at least 8 generations of pure holland lops/netherland dwarfs. With them being certified by their club/associations, i guarantee that they don't have any disqualifications, and that they are indeed, good quality animals. But for hamsters, they breed so frequently..so anyone can create a 3 generation pedigree. And, the local hamsters aren;t certified by any club, as far as I know.

Its great that chualc has nice sized hamsters. This posted isn't directed at her, but I am just wondering about it and am always confused when people say they have quality hamsters, and even more confused when people say they have hamsters with sound genetics.

Why? And how does one really know? From the buyer's perpective, I don't see how a hamster can be proven to be of good quality and of having sound genetics. Conditioning a hamster so that they are nice sized and blocky doesn't mean good genetics, right?

I do agree that there is nothing black and white on paper to prove my hammies are guaranteed to have good genes. And precisely that is why I tried to do some clarification when M* do false claims in xxxxxxxxxx forum in terms of certification that my hammies r from Holland and then...[sigh]
But I take it as my reponsibilty to do proper selection in terms of features, fur, health and temperament as well as ensuring that they are happy and well taken care of in my family.
Anyway, thanks.

Dear moderator, can you close this thread.
That 6 weeks old gal is too cute for us to part with her

She is indeed very sweet-looking. Very tempting to me, if i t wasn't for the fact that I have too many on my hands already. lolz.

I find that its great that you care. I know many others that don't. I was hoping for some sort of reason, as to why people can say the hamsters are sound genetically, and i am glad that you agree that there is no black-and-white way of proving this in singapore. It is better than some others who i have asked, that can't answer, get offended and defensive, and say things like ` Its mine what..look already know got good genes` or ` I say its good quality means its good quality` OR worse, ` I breed so many already, u think i don't know meh? They look good what.`

Haha, i have no idea what went up in the other forum, cos i don't keep track, though a friend did mention it to me. But, don;t be too disheartened about that. There is always this forum! Lolz

Talking

If a hamsters have good genes, u can see from his fur, growth by comparing his age, his eyes, do a full medical checkup, or see how long he lives....if he can live up to 4 years, yes he is definately a good genes. All his litters, also have good genes, unless the female is not! Overseas, they have certificate for every hamsters, like birth cert. Over here, most probably, hamsters are cheap, compare to other animals, so no cert to prove, hence no black and white!

You have to consider recessive genes too. Just because the parents do not show it does not mean that the babies definitely have good genetics. Fur and body can be conditioned.
Seriously, even if both parents are of sound genetics, it does not gurantee that 100% of the babies are the same too. It just means that there is a higher chance that the babies are of sound genetics. Also, just because it lives longer does not mean that it is good quality with good genes. How you care for it plays a major part.

Btw, the birth cert you are referring to is actually called a pedigree
